About Us

The Special Interest Group (SIG) on Advanced Learning Technologies, Learning Analytics, Platforms and Infrastructure - abbreviated to ALT - aims to bring together researchers with interests in these and related topics and to advise APSCE on emerging topics that should be accommodated in ICCE conferences.

As learning technologies continue to evolve, there is an increasing need to move beyond isolated tools and algorithms toward integrated, deployable, and sustainable ecosystems that can support teaching and learning in authentic contexts. Recent advances in artificial intelligence, multimodal analytics, real-time sensing, and adaptive educational systems have made it possible to develop rich learning environments that operate across devices, platforms, and settings. At the same time, these developments bring important challenges related to system design, interoperability, privacy, robustness, scalability, and long-term deployment. SIG3 seeks to provide a forum for researchers and practitioners who are interested in these systems-level questions and in the infrastructures required to make advanced learning technologies effective in practice.

SIG3 seeks to provide intellectual leadership on the systems, platforms, and infrastructure that underpin advanced learning technologies. Its vision is to foster a strong research and practice community focused on the design, integration, deployment, and study of learning technology ecosystems that can support meaningful educational impact across diverse settings.

Why SIG3 Matters
The growing use of AI and data-driven technologies in education has created a strong need for research that considers not only intelligent methods, but also the platforms and infrastructures through which these methods are implemented and experienced. Systems must operate reliably in classrooms and other real-world settings, connect with existing tools and workflows, support educators and learners in usable ways, and address practical constraints such as privacy, access, and sustainability. SIG3 aims to highlight these challenges and opportunities, and to strengthen discussion around the systems-level foundations that enable innovation in educational technology.

Scope of Contributions
SIG3 welcomes contributions that address a reasonable subset of the following:

  • Design and development of learning technology platforms and integrated ecosystems
  • Research on deployment-ready systems that combine AI, analytics, sensing, and interaction
  • Studies of multimodal, adaptive, and real-time systems in authentic learning environments
  • Work on interoperability, orchestration, and coordination across tools and platforms
  • Infrastructure issues related to scalability, reliability, maintenance, and sustainability
  • Research addressing privacy, robustness, and responsible deployment in educational systems
  • Teacher-facing and learner-facing tools that support human oversight and decision-making
  • System-level studies that connect technical design with educational use and impact

Activities

  • Promote discussion on emerging directions in advanced learning technology platforms and infrastructure
  • Organize webinars, workshops, and SIG sessions related to systems-level research in education
  • Foster collaboration among researchers, practitioners, and developers working in this area
  • Support APSCE and ICCE in identifying important new themes related to deployable learning technologies
  • Build a community that connects technical innovation with real-world educational needs and impact

 

Through these efforts, SIG3 aims to strengthen APSCE’s role in supporting research and community building around advanced learning technology ecosystems, and to contribute to the development of platforms and infrastructures that enable the next generation of educational innovation.
